The King of Kaiju

Not much to say here. Just check out this clip from Japanese television program, MECHA IKE that combines two things near and dear to all of our hearts.

I dream of pinkie (NSFW)

Reviewing some of the travel snapshots I took this year and came across these from my trip to Montreal in the summer to attend the Fantasia Film Festival. The Cinémathèque Québécoise held a poster exhibition in conjunction with their "Films Érotiques Japonais" retrospective which was centered around Jasper Sharp's book, Behind the Pink Curtain: The Complete History of Japanese Sex Cinema (FAB Press). Always nice to see a celebration of the pink in a fancy art gallery. Wonder if anyone would consider bringing this exhibit to Toronto?

Found the old VHS jacket for the US release of The 36th Chambers of Shaolin. Love the little line art illustration of Gordon Liu.

a stub of zen

Another ticket stub from the past. So glad I got to see this epic on the big screen complete with intermission! And yes Jeff, you can borrow my DVD...

stubs

Sorting through old files of visuals that I collected and planned to use for clip art back when I was putting together my zine Asian Eye and discovered these tickets from the now closed Chinatown cinemas. These scraps of paper represent my experiences watching such films as: Armour of God 2; Spooky Family; Once A Thief; The East Is Red; Fong Sai Yuk; Hard Boiled; Once Upon A Time in China I & II; Story of Ricky; High Risk; Full Throttle; and several other not so memorable films.

I really miss those places. Cheap double bills. Exotic snack foods. The steep stairs leading up the the balcony entrance at The Peral (previously The Golden Harvest and later The Mandarin). Kids racing around the aisles oblivious to the insane violence unspooling on the screen. Going to late night Chinatown noodle shops to recount what we had seen. Being the only gweilo in the theatre. The old table top Pac-Man game in the lobby of The Far East. All gone. Nostalgia.
